Our Car Seat Program Helps Safely Secure Your Baby on Board
Kearney Fire & Rescue is proud to have several Car Seat Technicians amongst its staff to provide another very valuable service to our community: child seat safety inspections.
These inspections are provided here at the fire station. We have also partnered with Safe Kids to provide certified child passenger safety technicians and instructors for inspections on an individual basis as well as at events. Find out more about Child Passenger Safety Certifications/Events.
What We Do
Kearney Fire and Rescue is dedicated to the safety of our community, and we are proud to have a few of our members trained as Car Seat Technicians. These members have obtained National Child Passenger Safety Certification through Safekids.org in conjunction with Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Our car seat technicians will assist in:
- The installation of your car seat.
- Checking that car seats are properly installed.
- Ensuring the car seats are fitted appropriately for your child.
- Inspecting the car seat(s) for expiration and recalls.
If you find yourself in need of a car seat, please call the station, and one of our technicians will be happy to help you.

Certified Car Seat Technicians
We pride ourselves on being able to provide this service to our district residents and other Kansas City locals as one of the few organizations north of the river who have this program.
Every day, we have Car Seat Technicians on duty who are able to install and inspect child safety equipment.
Our staff have been through a certified child safety seat technician course, and they are required to complete continuing education on these products and know the most up-to-date safety considerations.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set up a time to have my car seat inspected?
With certified Child Safety Seat Technicians on daily, you can call us to schedule a time to stop by.
How do I know if my child needs a child safety seat still or are they ready for a booster seat?
Generally, kids must meet three benchmarks. They are between the ages of 5 and 9 when they begin to outgrow the weight limitations of a 5-point harness car seat. Kids weighing over 65 pounds are ready to switch to a booster seat once your child reaches 49 inches (about 4 feet) tall.
Do you take old car seats?
Unfortunately, we have no way to dispose of or recycle used car seats. Our personnel would recommend not purchasing a used car seat unless you can verify the history of the seat and be sure it hasn’t been in any accidents.
