The Kearney Fire & Rescue Protection District responded to three structure fires last week of the total of nineteen calls.Early Monday morning at 0022 minutes they were called to a small house fire in the 11400 block of Chandler Road, where smoke was coming from the eaves on arrival. The fire was contained to the attic area and brought under control shortly after arrival. Fire damage was minimal and believed to have been caused by worn electrical wires.Liberty Fire provided mutual aid assistance at the scene, and Excelsior Springs provided mutual aid assistance to the Kearney Station. At approximately 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2 the district responded to a structure fire at Watkins Mill which is a borderline call with the Lawson Fire District. The building which was a 30ft X 40ft metal maintenance building suffered significant damage due to the location of the fire and the structural modifications that had been made to the building.Personnel were on the scene for six hours and were assisted by Excelsior Springs, Lawson and Wood Heights Fire District. The cause of the fire is believed to be an LP gas heater.   Friday afternoon at 1315 hours the district responded to a structure fire in the 17100 block of Jackson Avenue.Heavy smoke was coming from the structure on arrival and thefirefighters were faced with some very intense heat upon entering the structure. The fire was brought under control in approximately thirty minutes after arrival.Holt Fire District provided mutual aid assistance at the scene and Liberty and Excelsior Springs provided mutual aid assistance to the station. The fire that began in a basement room appeared to have smoldered for a considerable time and actually burnt up through a first floor room into the attic area. The house sustained significant damage due to the spread of the fire, and the cause is believed to have been an electrical heater being used to close to combustibles.   During two of these structure fires the district responded to overlapping calls with mutual aid assistance.
