The Kearney Fire & Rescue Protection District is a progressive, innovative combination emergency services department established in August of 1990 which protects 85 square miles of north central Clay County including the City of Kearney. Missouri. The District borders the City of Liberty and the Fishing River Fire District to the South, Kansas City and Smithville Area Fire District to the West, Excelsior Springs and Lawson Fire District to the East, and Holt Community Fire District to the North. A fire district coverage map is available on the Clay County Missouri website. This area is roughly the area that was served by the department since 1949 as a city volunteer department until the district was formed.
We provide fire, rescue, and ALS ambulance service out of our headquarters station which is located in the center of our district at 201 E. 6th (92 hwy). Equipment consists of two 2001 Freightliner ALS ambulances, 2001 Pierce Quantum 1,500 GPM pumper, 1998 Pierce Quantum 75' ladder truck (Quint), 1990 E One 1,250 GPM pumper, two tankers a 1992 and 1986 1,800 gallon stainless steel tankers with fol da tanks, two brush vehicles a 1988 and 1996 with 225 gallon water tanks. In addition to fire and EMS, we participate with the Northland Fire Chief's Council Haz Mat team and house a decontamination trailer.
The District is comprised of a staff of 3 career administrative personnel including Chief, Deputy Chief and administrative assistant, 18 career shift employees all dual trained and certified in fire and EMS, five part time personnel, and approximately 25 volunteers. There are three shifts of six personnel working a 24/48 hour schedule comprised of a shift officer that is either an EMT or EMT-P, and two-three of each FF-EMT or FF-EMT-P. Additionally part time personnel and some of the volunteers work two shifts per month.
We are also very proud of our continued improvements with facilities, equipment and personnel that has allowed us to improve our ISO classification for the entire district to a Class 4, within five road miles of our station or Liberty Station 3. Our recent review of our strategic plan proposed our career staffing to increase by six personnel every three years which six were added the end of 2004 and we plan to add six in 2009 and 2013 if our assessed value growth supports this. We will also review over this time frame for the addition of a second station and continually update our ten year strategic financial plan in support of this.
